NEW YORK — New York City politicians are calling on Whoopi Goldberg to apologize for suggesting on air that a local bakery had declined to make “The View” co-host a batch of desserts for her birthday because of her political beliefs.

New York City politicians are urging Whoopi Goldberg to apologize over her claims a Staten Island bakery declined her birthday dessert order.

The left-leaning host of “The View” said the business in a Republican stronghold declined to take an order under her name. The bakery said politics had nothing to do with it.

Whoopi Goldberg claimed that a historic bakery on Staten Island wouldn’t fill a dessert request that she’d made because the business didn’t like her politics. The owner of the bakery, Holtermann’s, said that a major maintenance issue at the business had prevented it from filling any large orders,
